Impressions by Julia Lauter
An image that captured my eye in every Indian city: The black kites that inhabit the sky, circling above it all. Wherever I was – in the midst of a bazar, in a bourgeois residental area, on top of a dumpyard – if I looked up, those enormous birds were there. For me, the obvious stranger, seeing them gave me comfort: Like me they would wander around, restlessly examining. While they were looking for food, I was looking for stories. Many times I felt a secret sisterhood between me and the kites.
